Abstract
1420945 Pipes J B WEST 12 Sept 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 43004/72 Heading F2P A pipe for undersea use comprises an inner metal pipe 1 surrounded by a concrete jacket assembled from one or more preformed concrete rings 2, 3, 4 with a set grout composition 7 between the pipe and jacket. Rubber &c. sealing rings 5, 6 are disposed between the abutted ends of the concrete rings 2 &c. The inner metal pipe 1 is initially primed and may be coated with a bituminous compound 10 such as asphalt. It is then drawn into the horizontally arranged concrete rings 2 &c., either on a bottom wheel, with sideways locating jockey wheels maintaining it central within the concrete rings, or alternatively on spring loaded roller bearings. Temporary sealing collars are attached to the ends of the pipe, and grout 7 is introduced through bottom holes 9 into the space between the metal pipe 1 and the concrete rings 2 &c. Air is displaced through top holes 8 as the grout 7 is fed in. The grout 7 may be wet concrete, cement, a plastics, coal tar or asphalt. If the latter bituminous materials are employed, the metal pipe 1 can be coated at this stage, rather than before insertion into the concrete rings 2 &c. When the grout 7 has set, the temporary end collars are removed. The protruding ends of the inner metal pipe 1 are welded to the like ends of similar pipes and each join is surrounded by a concrete ring.
