Abstract
1419429 Vegetation control OCEANOGRAPHY INTERNATIONAL CORP 9 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6453/73 Heading AlE [Also in Division H5] A method of vegetation control uses equipment for generating microwave energy for application to an area of vegetation to be destroyed. A low-frequency generator 12 supplies power to electromagnetic-wave generators 14 which produce continuous-wave, pulsed or modulated signals in the frequency range 0.3 to 300 GHz. The output from these generators is fed via waveguides 16 to an energy radiator 18 which is passed over the selected area. A root plough 40 may be attached to the radiator 18 to reflect back energy into the area being cleared. Variation of the energy density is obtained by controlling the power and duration of the emission from the radiator. In examples quoted, radiation at a frequency of 2.45 GHz is transmitted through a radiator having an effective area of 0.02m<SP>2</SP> at powers of up to 1300 watts for up to 32 seconds giving energy densities up to 2MJ/m<SP>2</SP>.
