Abstract
1419342 Quartz glass MATSUSHITA ELECTRONICS CORP 23 May 1973 [30 May 1972 20 June 1972] 24539/73 Heading C1M A process for producing quartz glass includes the steps of mixing a powdery rock crystal with, as a binder, a liquid including ethyl silicate or polyvinyl alcohol, drying the resulting mixture to form grains, and then fusing the grains in a furnace. The rock crystal is placed in a granulation vessel 7 as shown in Fig. 2 and the binder is added by way of the spray nozzle 8 while rotating the vessel. The resulting mixture is dried by heating while continuing the rotation. The globular grains (3-10 mm.) are then charged to a conventional vertical furnace through a shoot positioned at the upper part of the furnace where the quartz glass is produced. The specific examples use a 30% by weight solution of (a) "Ethyl silicate 40" in alcohol and water and (b) polyvinyl alcohol in water.
