Abstract

1417499 Alkylene or cycloalkylene bis- (nitrobenzoate(s)) MONSANTO CO 22 April 1974 [23 April 1973] 17462/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a method of producing an alkylene or cycloalkylene bis-(nitrobenzoate) of the formula wherein X is halogen, n is zero or one and R is a linear or branched C 2 to C 8 alkylene radical characterized by initially heating at a temperature of 150‹ to 300‹ C. substantially equimolar amounts of each of a nitrobenzoic acid and a C 2 to C 8 alkylene or cycloalkylene glycol to form the corresponding hydroxyalkyl-nitrobenzoate then adding an additional substantially molar amount of a nitrobenzoic acid to the reaction mixture, continuing heating the reaction mixture at a temperature of 150‹ to 300‹ C. to produce the alkylene- or cycloalkylene-bis- (nitrobenzoate) and separating the resulting benzoate product from the reaction mixture. Optionally water of reaction may be removed from the reaction mixture. Also part of the invention is a method of producing an alkylene- or cycloalkylene - bis - (aminobenzoate) which comprises reducing to amino groups the nitro groups of an alkylene- or cycloalkylene-bis-(nitro benzoate) according to the invention.
