Abstract

1411627 Magnetic bearings LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 28 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 54986/72 Heading F2A [Also in Division G3] The radial position of a body in a magnetic bearing is controlled by a magnet coil energized according to the body position as detected by two windings connected in opposition, and located inside the magnet coil. As shown, coils 4 on a toroidal core 2 support a ferromagnetic cylinder 1, the air gap 3 being measured using windings 5 mounted within the coils 4. The inductance of the windings, which is dependent upon the actual air gap, may be measured using a signal of higher frequency than the frequency of the supply to coils 4. The current in coils 4 is controlled according to the measured air gap to maintain the cylinder coaxial with core 2. The windings 5, may be separated by a magnetic path 6, and can be mounted in each of four coils 4 spaced around the core 2, in an individual coil providing a correcting force (Fig. 2, not shown), or may comprise two elements mounted coaxially (Fig. 3, also not shown), to support a cylinder with its longitudinal axis vertical.
