Abstract

1411222 Laminated construction panels INTERWEST GENERAL CORP 18 Jan 1973 [22 Oct 1971] 49212/71 Heading B5N A laminate which may be used as a constructional panel comprises a composite layer bonded to one or both faces of a core layer, the composite layer comprising (i) an outer layer of solid particles and hardened resinous binder, (ii) a support layer, and (iii) an inner layer as in (i) and having a surface stratum of excess binder by which the bonding occurs, the core layer absorbing or incorporating said excess binder and engaging the support layer. The composite layer may be made by doctoring a mixture of binder and particles on to a base layer, which may be glass or metal treated with a release agent or a gypsum board forming part of the laminate), applying a support layer to the doctored layer, doctoring a second mixture of binder and particles containing excess binder and allowing the particles to settle whereby the surface stratum of binder is formed. Excess binder may also be provided in the first mixture and may be absorbed by a suitable support material or, if the support is permeable, may contribute to the formation of the surface stratum by settlement of the particles in the second mixture through the support. After the core has been applied and the binder hardened, a second composite layer may be applied to the other side of the core. The particles may be sand, stone, slag or metal. The binder may be a curable polyester or polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyether, polyurethane, polyethylene, phenol-formaldehyde or epoxy resin. The support may be metal or plastics net, paper, gauze ribbon or glass fibre fabric. The core may be corrugated or honeycomb board or sand with a deficiency of polyester binder. The layer (iii) may be continuous or discontinuous. The laminate may be flat or curved.
