Abstract

1410947 Glass coated wires R E PICKSTONE and J D STALKER 1 Nov 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52143/72 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] An insulated electric conductor comprises a high temperature wire and insulation disposed thereabout of a borosilicate glass and silica which is fused at high temperature to form a mass having a viscosity greater than the viscosity of the glass and silica at the same temperature. The borosilicate glass is preferably a low alkali glass and the silica is either in the form of a quartz yarn, preferably in a proportion of not less than 70% by weight of the total glass + silica, or of a finely divided silica, preferably in a proportion of from 10 to 30% by weight and preferably produced by in situ hydrolysis of ethyl silicate. In both cases, the glass is also a yarn, the yarn or yarns being wound round the wire. A high temperature filler such as alumina powder may be added.
