Abstract
1410315 Mass separation of ions AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 24 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 03291/74 Heading H1D In a method of separating ions according to their mass, singly charged primary ions of mass M are formed by a molecular beam 2 in a collision box 1 containing the substance to be studied, the primary ions are extracted at potential V 1 by extraction electrodes 3 to a second collision box 7 at potential V 2 where the primary ions dissociate to give secondary ions including one of mass m which is extracted by electrodes 11 with kinetic energy e(V 1 -V 2 )m/M+eV 2 and passes to an electrostatic analyser 12 which transmits only those ions having a predetermined energy which are incident on a retractable detector 16. A further stage 20, 23, 24 corresponding to 7, 12, 16 may be provided for high mass ions. A magnetic analyser 25 may be provided at the exit of analyser 12 or 23 for identifying the transmitted ions. The method may be used for determining M, detecting the presence of the primary ion in a mixture or for isotope separation.
