Abstract
1409089 Photographic silver halide bleachfixing process KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO Ltd 22 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 59529/72 Heading G2C A photographic element having a layer containing a magenta coupler and a developed silver halide colour image of a dye obtained from the magenta coupler, the coupler having the formula:- (where R is substituted aryl; R' is alkyl, -NHR#,, -NHCOR'" or -NHCONHR"' where R"' is alkyl, (substituted phenoxy) alkyl, or substituted aryl; and R"' is H or a group capable of splitting off during coupling) is simultaneously bleached and fixed in the presence of at least one hardener selected from: (A) epoxy type hardeners of the formula: - (where R4 is alkylene, oxygen interrupted alkylene or phenylene), (B) heterocyclic ethyleneimine type hardener of one of the formulae:- (where each of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are ethyleneimino, halogen, 1-4C alkoxy or where n is 1-6, provided that at least one of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is ethyleneimino, (C) acryloyl type hardeners of the formula:- CH 2 = C(R 5 ) - CO-X-CO-C(R 6 ) = CH 2 (where each of R 5 and R 6 is H or 1-4C alkyl; and X is an organic diamine or diol residue derived by removal of two H from amino groups of said diamine or OH groups of said diol, -NH- or , when R 5 and R 6 are both H, a group of the formula:- where n is 1 or 2, and Z is -CH 2 -N(R 7 )-CH 2 -, R 7 being 1-4C acyl when n is 1 and -CH2-CH2- when n is 2), and (D) methanesulphonic acid ester type hardener of the formula:- (CH 3 SO 2 ) n -R 8 (where n is 1, 2 or 3; and R 8 is a divalent or trivalent organic polyol residue derived by removal of 2 or 3 H from OH groups of said polyol). The magenta coupler may be present in the layer before exposure. The hardener may be present in the layer before exposure (see Examples), may be applied to the image-containing element before bleach-fixing by spraying a solution thereof, or may be present in the bleach-fix bath. Many examples are given of the couplers and hardeners. Stain-free colour photographs are obtained and the hardener gives plasticity to the element.
