Abstract

1409015 Photo-polymerizable materials BADISCHE ANILIN - & SODA - FABRIK A G 18 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2619/73 Heading G2C. A photopolymerizable material comprises (i) a metal support which may be mechanically and/or chemically treated or coated with a primer, (ii) a layer of 50-98% by weight of a polyamide and 2- 50% by weight of a curable phenolic resin having a M.W. of less than 10,000 optionally admixed with a minor amount of an epoxy resin or an aminoplast, either having a M.W. of less than 1,000 and the layer being cured by heating between 80‹ and 300‹C and (iii) a photo-polymerizable layer of 50- 90% by weight of a polyamide, 10-50% by weight of a monomer containing at least 2 ethylenically unsaturated double bonds, a photo-initiator and optionally containing up to 30% by weight of monomer of a monomer containing only 1 double bond and, optionally, (iv) a transparent cover sheet. Layer (ii) may contain pigments such as iron oxide or lead-chromate and act as an anti-halation layer but its primary function is to ensure adhesion between the support and layer (iii) which is laminated to layer (ii). The support may be aluminium or steel which is coated with tin on the opposite side to layer (ii). The material is imagewise exposed and developed to remove the unexposed areas of layer (iii) to produce a printing plate; layer (ii) being unaffected by development. The primer may be a polyester mixed with a di-isocyanate which is heated to cure it. Layer (iii) may contain metal complex, phthalocyanine or indigoid dyes.
