Abstract

140,892. Horne, H. W. March 15, 1919. Variable. - speed ratchet gearing comprises pneumatic resilient links combined with nested toothed gearing. A cylinder 1 containing elastic fluid such as air is reciprocated by the engine. Its piston 2 is connected by a rod 3 through a ratchet device 12 to an internally toothed ring 6. The ring 6 is geared through fixed idlers 8 - - 11 to a toothed gear 7 on an ultimately driven shaft 5. There is an air passage 15 in the rod 3 between the cylinder 1 and the atmosphere. Valves 18, 19 are also provided. In a modification, the piston is reciprocated by the engine, and the cylinder is connected to the ratchet device through a rackrod.
