Abstract

1406827 Centrifugal pumps K D REID 8 Nov 1972 51415/72 Heading F1C An impeller shaft 1 is journalled in bearings 8, 9 carried by spaced plates 6, 7, the plate 7 nearer the impeller 2 being secured to a tubular housing extension 4 which extends from the impeller housing 3, a liquid seal 10 being interposed between the impeller and the bearing 9. The seal may comprise a stuffing box free to float transversely of the shaft axis and having a spring-pressed gland or may comprise a self-lubricating seal ring of carbon or synthetic material which is urged against the underside of the plate 7 by a resilient tubular bellows of rubber or synthetic material which is secured at one end to the seal and at the other end to the impeller shaft. Pressure build-up in the extension 4 is prevented by a relief duct 24 which can also serve as a second inlet at high delivery flow or if the main inlet 3a is blocked.
