Abstract

1405789 Electroacoustic transducer KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 2 Nov 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 50637/72 Heading H4J An electroacoustic transducer which relies upon both capacitor and piezoelectric effects has a vibratory diaphragm 12 (Fig. 4-1) of piezoelectric polymer which develops expansion and contraction movements parallel to its faces when an alternating potential difference is applied to two electrodes 13, 13<SP>1</SP> one on each face. A fixed electrode 11 is located in spaced relation to the diaphragm 12. When an input signal is applied between the two electrodes on the diaphragm 2 and between the fixed electrode 11 and the nearer electrode 13<SP>1</SP> on the diaphragm 12a combination, additive, vibration of the diaphragm 12 is caused by the piezoelectric effect of the diaphragm 12 and by the attractive and repulsive forces between the fixed electrode 11 and the nearer electrode 13<SP>1</SP> on the diaphragm 12. Preferably the fixed electrode 11 carries an electret 10. If not, a polarization potential is applied between the fixed electrode 11 and the nearer electrode 13<SP>1</SP> of the diaphragm 12. The diaphragm 12 is curved, even in its contracted state. In some arrangements it may be fixed locally, e.g. at a central point thereof. The transducer may be used in headphones, loudspeakers, microphones and pickups. A push-pull transducer (Fig. 5) has a piezoelectric polymer film diaphragm 12 electroded on both sides. Two fixed electrodes 9, 9<SP>1</SP> each have an electret confronting the diaphragm 12. The secondary of a transformer 15 has one tap connected to one fixed electrode 9 and to the remote electrode on the diaphragm 12 and the other tap connected to the other fixed electrode 9<SP>1</SP> and to the remote electrode on the diaphragm 12. A headphone (Fig. 8) comprises an aluminium electrode 11 with an electret 10 spaced from a piezoelectric polymer diaphragm 12 having electrodes on its opposite sides. A signal source is connected between the electrode 11 and a diaphragm electrode and between the two electrodes on the diaphragm. A transformer is unnecessary for normal use. The piezoelectric polymer is preferably formed from a polyvinylidene fluoride or a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and at least one monomer copolymerizable with vinylidene fluoride. Alternative polymers are vinylidene chloride resin, vinyl fluoride resin, or vinyl chloride resin. A non-oriented film may be used after being subjected to a D.C. field at elevated temperature. The non-oriented film may be axially oriented, by stretching, before application of the D.C. field. The electret, if used, is preferably made from 70% by weight polyvinylidene chloride, balance polymethyl methacrylate. The electret properties are obtained by treating the polymer sheet for 30 mine. under the application of a D.C. field of 1000 kV/cm. at 90‹ C. and then cooling to room temperature.
