Abstract

1402593 Reciprocating pumps and compressors; I C engine driving gear N F RODRIGUEZ 6 Nov 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 51097/72 Headings F1A FIB and FIN] An I C engine, pump or compressor comprises at least one rotary cylinder block 2 in a stationary casing 1, a piston 29 in a cylinder 3 in block 2 being connected by a rod 30 to a split crank-shaft 5 rotatably mounted in block 2 by bearings 6 and having a pinion 10 engaging a ring gear 12 fixed to casing 1. Drive-shafts 17 are bolted to the cylinder block, one shaft carrying a flywheel 23 with a starter ring gear 42 for I.C. engine use. In the engine shown, cooling water passages 14 and a sparking plug 32 or fuel injector are provided. Lubrication is effected by oil supplied to the casing interior via ports 22 and fed to the bearings via passages 26 to 28. The piston crown 34 and combustion spare 35 are shaped as shown in Fig. 3 to assist relative rotation of the block and casing. Two, three or four cylinder blocks may be bolted together in a common casing with their pistons 180, 120 and 90 degrees out of phase, respectively. The ratio of the ring gear 12 to the pinion 10 is 2 : 1. The engine shown has inlet and exhaust ports 40, 39. In the pump or compressor embodiment of Fig. 15 (not shown) a further inlet port and exhaust port are provided diametrically opposite ports 40, 39.
