Abstract
1401486 Centrifugal compressors; cooling I C engine change WALLACE-MURRAY CORP 22 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54032/72 Headings F1B and F1C A centrifugal compressor, e.g. a supercharger driven by an exhaust-gas turbine 10, comprises a centrifugal impeller comprising vanes 48 which are preceded by axial-flow inducer vanes 47. A portion 47a of each vane 47 extends radially beyond the vanes 48 so as to induce a separate airflow which passes via a separate annular chamber 41 to a separate outlet. The volute 42 for the main air-flow is separated from the chamber 41 by annular walls 39, 39a. Before being discharged to atmosphere, the separate air-flow is used to cool the main air-flow before the latter enters the I.C. engine. This may be done in an external heat exchanger. Instead or in addition, the cooling may be effected by heat exchange through the wall 39, which may be provided with fins. The vanes 47 and the hub 51 carrying them are slightly under@ along a conical contour 56 so that when the hub is clamped into position by a nut 53 so that it bears against the main hub 52 and the vanes 47 bear against the main vanes 48, the vanes 47 apply a vibration-damping force to the vanes 48 which is concentrated adjacent the outer edges of the latter.
