Abstract

1401451 Paper making WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 19 June 1973 [3 July 1972] 30996/72 Addition to 1329409 Heading D2B In an improvement in or modification to the method of manufacturing paper or other non-woven fibrous material as described in patent specification 1329409, the surface active agent serves to effect foaming of the liquid medium and also serves as a binder material in the fibrous material web formed. The surface active agent may be hydrophilic gums derived from natural, or synthetic sources. The naturally occurring gums include the broad carbohydrate and protein classes constituted by gums derived from animal, plant and microbial sources. Of particular use are plant gums and their derivatives, cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose ethers and esters, and soy protein. The surface active agent may be used in combination with a second, conventional surface active agent which serves to help foaming but does not serve as a binder material. At least some of the fibres may be beaten to at least 30‹SR which further increases the binding effect and maintains the bulk of the product at a high level.
