1398248 Seaming non-metallic sheet material REED INTERNATIONAL Ltd 1 May 1974 [11 May 1973] 22543/73 Heading B5K A device for cutting and welding plastics sheets 9 comprises a pair of spaced anvils 11a, 11b and an assembly for cutting and welding the sheets 9 between the anvils 11a, 11b during relative movement between the anvils and the assembly towards each other, the assembly comprising (a) a carrier beam 1, (b) pressing members 2, 3 mounted on the beam 1 for engaging the anvils 11a, 11b, respectively, this mounting being such that continued relative movement between the beam 1 and the anvils 11a, 11b is permitted after the members 2, 3 engage the anvils 11a, 11b, the member 2 engaging the anvil 11a before the member 3 engages the anvil 11b, (c) a tensioning bar 7 to tension the sheets 9 after engagement of the member 2 with the anvil 11a and before engagement of the member 3 with the anvil 11b, and (d) cutting and welding means on the beam 1 and comprising a hot wire cutter 5 arranged to pass between the anvils after engagement of the members 2, 3 therewith, and radiant heating means 4 arranged to follow the hot wire 5 into a position between the anvils to increase the weld width initially provided by the wire 5. As shown, the anvils 11a, 11b are formed by a unit 11 and are capped by silicone rubber strips 10. The beam 1 is reciprocated along guide bars 25 by a pneumatic cylinder 17. The members 2, 3 are mounted on the beam 1 through springs 14 and their lower ends are formed by tubes 6, 8 through which cooling air can be passed. The hot wire 5 and the radiant heating strip 4 are tensioned by springs 22, 23 as they expand upon heating. An air blast tube 30 is provided to cool the weld after formation. The device may operate vertically or horizontally. In a modification (not shown), the anvil unit is movable relative to the cutting and welding assembly which may move simultaneously therewith or remain stationary.
