Abstract

Letter-spacing mechanism.-In escapement mechanism of the alternate-detent type, the normally-disengaged detent is provided with a pivoted dog for engaging the escapement wheel when the detent is rocked, and an abutment for holding the dog in engagement; the arrangement prevents the escapement wheel from being obstructed when the carriage is returned. As shown in Fig. 1, the normally-disengaged detent 14 is provided with a pin for releasing the normally-engaged detent 13 from the escapement wheel 10, and a pivoted dog 14<b> for engaging the escapement wheel, a stationary abutment 17 and an abutment 18 on the detent holding the dog in engagement. The detent 14 may be connected to the universalbar mechanism by a link 8, a spring 19 being provided to compensate for variations in the stroke of the universal bar. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also escapements in which the normally-disengaged detent is provided with a rigid part for engaging the escapement wheel. In the escapement shown in Fig. 2 (Cancelled), the normally-disengaged detent 14 is provided with pin 16 for releasing the normally-engaged detent 13. In the escapement shown in Fig. 7 (Cancelled) both detents 25, 30 are mounted on the same pivot 32, the normally-disengaged detent 25 being actuated by a link 24 and having a pin 31 for releasing the other detent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
