Abstract
1397600 Making S G iron R L RANKE 7 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 41529/72 Heading C7D Molten iron is poured into a container in which are ferruginous briquettes each weighing 2 to 10 oz. and containing 5 to 7 wt per cent Mg and 0À3 to 0À9% Ce, the balance preferably being finely divided iron, cast iron, or steel. The amount of briquettes should be such that the treated iron contains 0À03 to 0À07% Mg. In a preferred embodiment Ce is incorporated in the briquettes as oxyfluoride containing at least 37À5% CeO 2 and at least 22% fluoride. The briquettes may be held in position at the bottom of the treatment ladle by covering them with particulate steel.
