1396809 Severing webs by bursting LAMSON INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 Dec 1973 [26 Jan 1973] 57491/73 Heading B4B A web severing apparatus comprises a constant tension infeed mechanism 20 for a web W, a pair of high speed pull rolls 65, 66 for gripping successive new ends of the web and bursting sheets therefrom, the resistance of the web to the pulling force of the pull rolls being solely effected by the retarding effect of the constantly applied tension of the normal feed of the infeed mechanism. The web, of e.g. of forms having edge perforations, is fed by a pin feed belt 21 past an adjustable scrubbing roller 30, over a supporting roller 40 to the high-speed pull rolls 65, 66. A series of rubber-faced rolls 52 are rotatably mounted on a pivoted frame 45; the frame also carries a knife 50 against which the web is caused to be separated when in the position of the frame shown in Fig. 3. A series of larger diameter rolls 60 are also rotatably mounted on the frame. The high-speed rolls 65, 66 are mounted on a housing which is adjustable towards and away from the bursting station 15. Extensible guide members 80, 86 are provided for controlling the movement of the web before its leading end reaches the rolls 65, 66. When bursting paper webs, the frame 45 is located in the position shown in Fig. 3, the severance taking place at the knife 50. When it is required to sever heavier weight material, e.g. cards interconnected by lines of weakness, the frame 45 is pivoted to bring the rolls 60 into contact with the roll 40, the knife and rolls 52 being lifted to an inoperative position, Fig. 4 (not shown); in the latter case the cards are severed at the nip between rolls 60 and 40.
