Abstract

1396525 MgO and Cr 2 O 3 based refractory; AMERIKANISCHE MAGNESIT AG 1 Sept 1972 [21 Sept 1971] 40663/72 Headings C1J and C1A A refractory sintered material based on MgO and Cr 2 O 3 is produced by sintering a synthetic magnesium chromite or a synthetic mixture of magnesium chromite and MgO or Cr 2 O 3 , which mixture has 5-82 wt. per cent Cr 2 O 3 content with 0À05 to 4 wt. per cent CaO or SrO or corresponding amounts of substances forming said oxides on firing at at least 1750‹ C. The sintered material may be mixed with sintered magnesia such that the mixture contains 3-80 wt. per cent Cr 2 O 3 . The synthetic magnesium chromite or its mixture with MgO or C 2 O 3 may be produced by thermal dissociation of the chlorides. In example the production of sintered material from a mixture of the chromite and MgO with chalk is described and in Example 2 the material is also made into bricks by mixing with sulphite cellulose and firing at 1850‹ C.
