Abstract

1395700 Treated pigments LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 60719/71 Heading C1N A pigment is treated with a 1,2 diol having 11-30 carbon atoms in the main chain, or with the corresponding epoxide which forms the diol by reaction with water. Exemplified treating agents are tetradecan-1,2-diol and tetradecylene 1,2-oxide. The pigment is preferably TiO 2 coated with SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 , but other pigments and inorganic coating materials are listed, and conventional coating methods described. The diol or epoxide may be added as a solid, liquid, solution or emulsion to the pigment, which is preferably in aqueous suspension. The pigment may then be spray dried and fluid energy milled. A lubricant, e.g. Mg, Zn or Al stearate, stearic acid, polyethylene wax or paraffin oil, may be incorporated with the pigment, and a surface active agent may also be added to the slurry, e.g., the diacetate of tallow oil diamine, sorbitan trioleate, or dialkyl quaternary ammonium chlorides.
