Abstract
1394450 Cooling I C engine lubricant KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A G 4 Dec 1972 [4 Dec 1971] 55883/72 Heading F1B [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] The fluid of a hydrodynamic brake 14, coupled via or in conjunction with a variable speed transmission unit 13 to an air-cooled compression ignition engine, and the engine lubricating oil are cooled in a common heat exchanger 12. The same oil may be used for the brake fluid and the engine oil and the heat exchanger may then be provided by the engine sump. A double-walled air cooled sump may have the brake fluid cooled by flow through the cavitv between the sump walls. In the embodiment shown oil from the sump 11 is pumped via the exchanger 12 and a fine mesh filter 15 to the brake 14 and via the exchanger to the fluid coupling 7 controlling the exchanger air cooling fan 6, the engine pistons 2 and the crankshaft bearings 5. A thermostatic valve 31 and magnetic valves 33, 34 control oil flow to the coupling 7 and the pistons 2. The brake (38), Fig.2 (not shown), may be combined as a unit with a fluid transmission (37), e.g. a torque converter, and the exchanger (41) may have three sets of passages (42, 43, 44), Figs.3 to 5 (not shown), with the air passages (42) arranged cross-flow to the oil passages (43, 44) in counter-flow. The oil passes through one set of passages to the transmission (37) and brake (38) and from the brake through the other oil passages to the engine.
