Abstract

1393547 Reverse osmosis DRESSER INDUSTRIES INC 13 April 1972 17160/72 Heading B1X Apparatus for separating at least part of one constituent of a multi-constituent liquid admixture from the remainder of the admixture, comprises a rotatably mounted body member; semi-permeable membrane means mounted on and for rotation with the body member and having a surface extending substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotaion of the body member, the semi-permeable membrane means separating a liquid admixture zone from a separated constituent zone; means for introducing liquid admixture into the liquid admixture zone; means for removing separated constituent from the separated constituent zone; means for removing said remainder of the admixture from the liquid admixture zone; and means for rotating the body member so as to increase, by centrifugal force, the pressure of liquid admixture contained in the liquid admixture zone to an extent sufficient to cause reverse osmosis of said one constituent through said semipermeable membrane means. As applies to the desalination of water, salt water is added through tube 64 to basket 62 containing a stack of annular filters comprising channels 78, semi-permeable membranes 80, supports 82 and fresh-water channels 84. On rotation around axis 61, pressure due to centrifugal force causes part of the water to pass through the membrane from channels 78 to channels 84, the salt being concentrated in the remaining liquid which passes to reservoir 96. Fresh water is ejected by nozzles 70, collected by shroud 72 and passes to reservoir 74. In an alternative arrangement (Fig 7, not shown) bundles of fibres replace the membranes.
