Abstract
1393468 Producing stainless steel ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 25 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 29980/73 Heading C7D In the manufacture of stainless steel having a C content of less than 0À03%, cold Cr-containing material, e.g. Fe-Cr and stainless steel scrap, is charged into a basic oxygen furnace with molten ferrous metal and top blown with O 2 supplied by a water-cooled lance. When at least 80% of the total O 2 has been supplied, a mixture of 5 parts by vol of a non-oxidizing gas, e.g. Ar, and 2 parts of O 2 is blown on to the surface for the remainder of the blow. The C content of the total charge is at least 3À5% and the Cr-containing- material constitutes at least 10 wt per cent of the total charge. Ni may be added to the ferrous metal and/or scrap if desired. Slag-forming ingredients such as burnt lime, dolomitic burnt lime and fluorspar may be added before or during blowing. After blowing has ceased, a mixture of Fe-Cr, Si and CaF2 may be added to recover Cr from the slag.
