Abstract

1393065 Desizing glass fabric FMC CORP 2 May 1973 [3 May 1972] 20828/73 Heading D1P A low-temperature wet process for desizing glass fibres to provide a stronger fabric after coronization, comprises dampening sized glass fibres with sufficient aqueous sizing solution containing a nonionic wetting agent (many of which are specified) and a water soluble peroxydiphosphate or peroxydisulphate salt to provide 0.1 to 2.0% of the peroxy compound and 0.025 to 0.1% of the wetting agent on the fibres based on the weight of the fibres being treated; heating and maintaining the dampened fibres at a temperature of from 160‹F to the boiling temperature of the solution for 5 to 240 seconds; washing the fibres so treated to substantially remove the desizing solution and size; and coronizing the washed fibres. The fibres are preferably in fabric form. The fabric is dried before being subjected to the coronization which includes heat treating at 650‹C. The peroxy compound is preferably tetrapotassium peroxydiphosphate, sodium peroxidiphosphate or sodium peroxydisulphate. The solution may further contain an alkali such as sodium hydroxide in an amount to provide at least 0.1% and preferably 0.25% in contact with the fabric based on the weight of the fabric. The processing temperature is preferably 212‹F obtained by contacting the dampened fabric with steam but this may be increased to 275‹F by performing the process in a pressure vessel.
