Abstract

1392998 Vehicle side light control SAINT GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 26 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49404/72 Heading G1A In a control system for controlling vehicle side lights according to the ambient light level a photosensitive element E, positioned in a hole or slot 20 at the edge of a windscreen 110, is in direct optical communication with the material of the windscreen by being embedded in a mastic 24 having the same refractive index as the glass its optical axis (or field of view) being directed through the material of the windscreen in a direction parallel to the surfaces of the glass. The photo-sensitive element E is covered by the windscreen frame 14 and in use it receives a fraction L of the total light impinging on the whole of the exposed area of the windscreen. The photo-sensitive element's output is amplified Fig. 6 (not shown) and fed to a control circuit which activates a relay turning on the side lights when the light intensity received falls below a predetermined level. The control circuit turns off the light when the intensity of the light received passes a second higher predetermined level. Several embodiments, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown) are disclosed dealing with tougher glass and layered safety glass.
