Abstract

1388172 Abrasive articles DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION Ltd 20 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13426/72 Heading C4V [Also in Division C7] A metal coated diamond is formed by coating a diamond with an alloy comprising a minor proportion of a carbide forming metal and then heating from 500‹ C. to just below the alloy melting temperature in a non oxidizing atmosphere to form a carbide bonding layer at the alloy diamond interface. The coating alloy is preferably Cu, Ni or Fe alloyed with a transition metal such as Ti, Cr, V and may be applied to the diamond by sputtering or vacuum evaporation. An electroless, electrolytic or vacuum evaporation coating of Ni may be deposited on the coated and heat treated diamonds which are used in abrasive tools, resin and metal bonded wheels, saws and compacts.
