Abstract

1388056 Shaft seals GITS BROS MFG CO 13 June 1972 27597/72 Heading F2B A shaft seal 10 comprises two J-section sealing rings 30, 31 having radial legs 35, 35a and curved bight sections 36, 36a, the rings being arranged with the bight sections in overlapping nested relation with the radial legs axially spaced apart. The rings are housed in a U- section housing 13 with the legs 35, 35a pressed against the sides 15, 18 of the housing by an 0-ring 32 and the bight 36 urged into sealing engagement with the rotary shaft 12 by a garter spring 33. The rings are free to move radially in the housing, the inward movement being restricted by rims 43, 43a on the legs engaging ledges 28, 29 on the housing sides 15, 18. The housing has a port 45 open to the high pressure side of the seal. In a modification, Fig. 4, the inner sealing ring 71 has a grit-excluding lip thereon which in use engages a radial abutment on the shaft. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), one or both of the sealing rings are radially segmented. The sealing rings may be of Teflon (Registered Trade Mark) or other plastics, e.g. polyimides or polyamides.
