Abstract

1387444 Coating particulate material with metal by fluidized bed DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION Ltd 31 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 25443/72 Headings C7B and C7F A method of metal coating particulate material (e.g. electrolytically or electrolessly) includes the steps of forming a bed of particulate material, fluidizing the bed by passing a metal coating solution through it, pulsating the flow of coating solution to cause the bed to pulsate, and causing the metal to deposit onto the material. The particulate material may be abrasive such as diamond, cubic boron nitride or silicon carbide or may be ceramic. The metal which is applied may be Cu, Ni, Au, Fe or Co. For example Cu is electrolytically coated onto diamond particles having an electroless Ni flashing thereon using a solution containing CuSO H 2 SO 4 and gelatine. As shown, a bed of particles 58 to be coated is fluidized by plating solution pumped upwardly through a perforated plate 44. A carbon cathode 52 contacts the bed and there is a porous membrane 50 and a tubular metal anode 54. The solution is circulated by a peristaltic pump 62 which is operated so as to cause the bed to pulsate. There is a throttling device 64 and flowmeter 66. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1194181.
