Abstract

Compasses, magnetic.-In mariners' compasses of the liquid type, provision is made whereby the pivot pin for the card may be withdrawn through the bottom of the bowl, the card then resting on a hollow support. As shown in Fig. 1, the bottom a is of glass and has fitted therein a ring b into which a socket c, securing a cup-like member e, is screwed. Within the bowl, a cross-bar i supports a hollow pivot or support g. The pivot pin j is screwed within the support g, and access to it can be obtained by unscrewing a plug k, which is normally tight on a leather washer f. The ring b is slightly dished, so that when the bowl is inverted and the pivot pin removed, any air bell which may be formed will be located at the ring b, and can be removed by pouring liquid into the cup c. In a modification, Fig. 5, the glass bottom is replaced by a flexible diaphragm l, and the parts b, c, e are replaced by a socket m into which the plug k is screwed.
