Abstract

1386164 Filling containers E HUBERS and G. J. HUBERS 24 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 24368/72 Heading B8T [Also in Division H1] A container 18, e.g. a battery cell, containing absorbent solid matter 19 to be impregnated with liquid is evacuated and filled under pressure by a pump 14 with a metered amount of liquid from a reservoir 16. The container is inserted into an opening 23 in the bottom of a filling chamber 12 and suction is applied through the port 24a to draw the container up towards the filler head 38 and to evacuate the container. The cell is then filled under pressure and the filled container is expelled from the chamber 12 by pressure applied through the port 24b. Bolts 27 and nuts 28 can be adjusted to ensure the hermetic sealing of the walls 24 of the chamber 12 and its end plates 20, 22. Waste prevention.-A vacuum pump 60, Fig. 2, removes any traces of liquid remaining in the pipes after filling. The pump is connected via a shut-off valve 58 to the pipe 78 between the check valve 76 in the outlet 74 of the metering pump 50 and the filler head 82. The valve 58 is controlled by a double-acting piston 112 synchronously with the valve 76. A container 54 is raised into engagement with the filler head by a double-acting piston 56. With valve 58 open and valve 76 shut, the pump 60 evacuates the container. The valve 58 is then shut, valve 76 is opened and the pump 50 dispenses a metered quantity of liquid into the container 54. Valve 76 is again shut and valve 58 opened as the container is lowered by the piston 56, and the pump 60 removes any drips remaining in the pipe 78.
