Abstract
1385921 K-A-type Zeolite Y YATSURUGI T KURATOMI and T TAKAISHI 27 Jan 1972 [31 March 1971 2 Oct 1971] 3935/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] A process for the preparation of improved K-A-type zeolite comprises contacting an A-type zeolite with potassium ions and divalent cations in solution to allow ion exchange of exchangeable cations in the A-type zeolite until equilibrium has been reached, the concentrations of potassium and the divalent cation in the solution(s) being such that more than 33À3 but not more than 83À3% of the exchangeable cations are replaced by potassium ions and from 16À7 up to but not including 66À7% by divalent cations at equilibrium when all the exchangeable cations are exchanged. The contacting may be carried out simultaneously or separately and consecutively with K ions and divalent cations. The preferred divalent cations come from the Groups II and IV and the transition metals may be used as chlorides or nitrates in solution. The product zeolite may be used to separate mixtures of molecules (polar and non-polar) having effective cross-sections of less than 5A. Separations given are monosilane from mixtures with phosphine; cis-2-butene from other isomers of butene and CO 2 from mixtures with hydrocarbons, e.g. ethane and methane.
