Abstract
1384807 Lasers UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 20 Nov 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 53600/72 Heading H1C A chemical laser has a condensed active medium, i.e. a solid or liquid, which is exploded to give CO2 or CO and other products such as N2 or H2O which are beneficial to lasing or which are at least not detrimental to lasing. The explosion products may be expanded freely or through a supersonic nozzle; where the products include free carbon this can be removed by initiating the explosion in an oxygen atmosphere. Other beneficial atmospheres may be used, e.g. helium. Fig. 3 shows an explosion chamber 25 in which the chemicals are detonated. Expansion nozzle 27 terminates in diaphragm 30 which allows the chamber to be pressurized with oxygen &c. if required. Optical windows 24 give access to the lasing region when the apparatus is used as an amplifier, mirrors being used when oscillation is to be achieved. The tube 35 may be open to air, or may be evacuated. The following chemical mixtures are referred to: pentanitroaniline; tetranitromethane (CN4- O8) + acrylonitrile (C3H3N); tetranitromethane + hexanitrosobenzene (C6N6O6); hexanitrosobenzene + perchloric acid or oxygen; pentaerythritol tetranitrate (C(CH2ONO2)). Oxygen and helium pressures are given, as are mixtures of explosives, gain and apparatus dimensions.
