Abstract
1383726 Purifying soap AJINOMOTO CO Inc and JAPAN CARBOXYLIC ACIDS CO Ltd 17 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18546/73 Heading C5D Unsaponifiable matter is removed from an aqueous solution of one or more alkali metal fatty acid soaps by adding a C 1 -C 3 alkanol to the aqueous soap solution and extracting the aqueous alcoholic soap solution with ethylene dichloride. The purified soap is obtained from the aqueous layer by distilling off the alcohol and water. The alkanol. may be methanol, ethanol or propanol and may comprise 5 to 50% of the aqueous alcoholic soap solution. 0À1 to 5 parts of ethylene dichloride per part of aqueous alcoholic solution are used. The soap is a sodium or potassium soap obtained by oxidizing paraffins and saponifying with aqueous NaOH. Prior to saponification, the crude fatty acids may be refined using a silica-alumina catalyst. The aqueous alkanolic soap solution may already exist.
