Abstract
1355207 Removal of acid impurities in ester formation NIZHNETAGILSKY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI ZAVOD PLASTMASS 11 Sept 1971 42471/71 Heading C2C The crude ester product of a monohydric alcohol and a carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof is purified by passing the crude mixture (e.g. at 70-80‹ C.) in the form of drops 0À5 to 10 mm. in size through an aqueous caustic alkaline solution and then removing the organic layer, comprising the ester, that forms on the surface of the alkaline solution. The caustic alkaline solution preferably has a concentration of alkali, (e.g. NaOH, KOH) of 2-20% by weight and a temperature of 40‹-70‹ C. The production of the ester is preferably effected in the presence of a catalyst selected from H 2 SO 4 , benzene sulphonic acid and p-toluene sulphonic acid and of an excess of alcohol, the esterification being continued until an acid/ester conversion of 90% is obtained. Examples describe the preparation of esters, which find use as plasticizers for polymers, from (1) sebacic acid and butanol, (2) phthalic anhydride and C 6-10 alcohols, 2-ethylhexanol, or C 7-9 alcohols, (3) sebacic acid and 2-ethylhexanol and (4) C 4-10 fatty acids and butanol.
