Abstract

1383653 Beacons METALLINE SIGNS Ltd 17 Nov 1972 [20 Nov 1971] 53997/71 Heading F4R A beacon lamp comprises a battery housing 10 surmounted by a gas discharge tube 33, the tube being enclosed by a lens 44, the tube and lens combining to produce a light beam which has a greater output within a range of angles between 0 and 20 degrees than in a similar range outside 0 to 20 degrees. The lens may be ring shaped and have a part 46 of plano-convex cross-section, a further part being of different cross-section to aid formation of the desired beam. The tube may be of the cold cathode type and form an almost complete circlet. A control means 23 mounted above the battery may include a flasher unit to operate the tube intermittently, and a photo-cell to operate the tube automatically during darkness or mains failure. Tubes giving different colours may be used, e.g. for aircraft runways or road hazards.
