1383585 Treating endless lengths of material SYNALLOY CORP 27 April 1972 [27 April 1971] 19713/72 Heading D1L Apparatus for treating endless lengths of material w in open width form comprises a tank 10 having inner and outer shells 23 and 22 respectively defining a generally annular treatment chamber, perforated inner and outer walls 12 and 13 defining in the chamber the liquid treatment zone and, with inner and outer shells 23 and 22, liquid passageways 25 and 26, a liquid throttle zone 11 communicating with the treatment zone and having a narrow, generally rectangular cross-section, liquid jet means 50 and 51 for feeding treatment liquid through the throttle zone 11 and thus entraining the web w and causing it to travel through the tank, liquid inlets 53 and 54 for feeding treatment liquid into passageways 26 and 25 and through perforated walls 12 and 13 to impinge on both surfaces of the web w in the treatment zone and circulation pumps (15) and (16) [Figs. I and 2, not shown] for withdrawing treatment liquid through conduits 41 and (42) from an expansion zone formed in the upper part of the tank 10 by baffles 32 and 58 and recirculating it to jets 51 and 50 and inlets 53 and 54. Movement of the web through the chamber may be assisted by a lift roll 60 mounted on shaft 60a above the expansion zone and having a cylindrical cage structure (see also Fig. 5, not shown). The roll 60 serves to lift the web w above the level of liquid in the tank and may be rotated by the web passing thereover. Alternatively the roll may be driven by treatment liquid, discharged through turbine jet nozzle 64b and fed from the circulating pumps via branch conduit 62, to control the speed of web travel through the throttle and treatment zones. The liquid distribution and circulation system operating with the treatment tank may, in addition to pumps 15 and 16, include means for feeding fresh treating agents (e.g. dyestuffs) to the expansion zone via conduit 71, means at the base. of the chamber for draining liquid therefrom, means for introducing rinsing cold or hot water, means for pressurising the chamber with steam, and means for evacuating the chamber (Fig. 3, not shown). A heat exchanger may be provided downstream of pumps 15 and 16 to maintain the recirculating treatment liquid at a predetermined temperature.
