Abstract
1381925 Hydrophilic polyurethane foams PECHINEY UGINE KUHLMANN 14 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 11779/72 Heading C3R Flexible, hydrophilic polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting in the presence of a blowing agent which comprises water with or without another blowing agent and a catalyst for the reaction, a polyisocyanate with a polyhydroxyl component which is a polyether polyol or mixture of polyether polyols containing 50 to 70% ethylene oxide groups expressed in weight based on the polyether polyol and having the following characteristics: (a) a mean equivalent M.W. of 800 to 2000 per OH group, (b) a number x of primary OH groups, based on the total number of OH groups of from 34À8 to 55%, (c) a ratio y of the value of ethylene oxide groups to the value of primary OH groups of from 1À1 to 1À7, with the proviso that for values of x in the range 45 to 55%, the ratio y is not higher than 1À3, while values of y greater than 1À3 imply corresponding values of x of from 34À8 to 45%, (d) a cloud point determined in accordance with standard test AFNOR T73403, method B of less than 30: the polyisocyanate and the polyether polyol (5) being used such that the NCO/OH ratio is at least 1. Toluene diisocyanate is the preferred polyisocyanate and the polyether polyols are preferably produced by condensing ethylene oxide and propylene oxide on an at least difunctional initiator. In a typical example, a polyether prepared by the random condensation or diethylene glycol of a mixture of ethylene and propylene oxides is mixed with a polyether, a polyether prepared by successive condensation or trimethylolpropane of propylene oxide, then ethylene oxide and the mixture reacted with 80/20 toluene diisocyanate in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst, a silicone oil and water.
