Abstract

1379871 Benzothiazolyl disulphide AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 22 Jan 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 3233/73 Heading C2C A continuous process for preparing benzothiazyl disulphide by oxidizing mercaptobenzothiazole with chlorine, comprises continuously introducing below the surface of an aqueous reaction mixture which is maintained at a temperature of from 20‹ to 75‹ C. and which is being vigorously agitated by a stirrer having a tip speed in excess of 400 ft./min., separate streams of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of mercaptobenzothiazole, an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and gaseous chlorine, the flow of the aqueous solution of the alkali metal hydroxide and of the gaseous chlorine being controlled so that the pH of the reaction mixture is maintained within the range of from 7 to 10 and the redox potential of the reaction mixture is maintained within the range of from - 150 to + 250 millivolts.
