Abstract

1379564 Bottles; container closures; labels OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 24 Nov 1971 [23 Nov 1970 31 March 1971 2 July 1971] 54488/71 Headings B8F and FIX A glass jar, or bottle 10 is provided with a protective heat-shrunk tubular thermoplastic sleeve 19 which extends from under the bottom wall 17 of the bottle upwardly to beyond the body portion having the greatest peripheral extent, e.g. the cylindrical portion 15. The mouth of the bottle is sealed by an aluminium cap 28, having a removable pressured tear strip and pull ring, and a polyethylene gasket 30. The gasket and upper edge portion of the sleeve are arranged to cushion impact of the bottle should it topple over on to its side, Fig. 6 (not shown). The sleeve may extend upwardly to just below the mouth rim of the bottle or jar, Figs. 9 and 7 (not shown), and may be sealingly engaged by the rim of a closure, e.g. a screw-type closure. In the embodiments of Figs. 8, 18 and 19 (not shown), the sleeved bottles have upper and lower enlargements, a waisted configuration, or ribbed formations. The sleeve may be pre-printed on its outer surface or on its inner surface, if of transparent material. Alternatively the bottle may be provided with decoration visible through a transparent sheath. The sleeve may be formed from a stretched seamless tube or a stretched rectangular blank, which is wound and lap heat-seamed, Figs. 4, 5, 9 and 10 (not shown). The sleeve is applied to a pre-heated bottle, and the assembly further heated in an oven. Alternatively the lapped edges of the wound blank may be secured together by heat-activating a hot melt adhesive applied to the inner side of the blank, said adhesive bonding the thus formed sheath to the bottle of (Fig. 9) on heating in the oven. The sleeve may be of foamed or non-foamed plastics material, suitable examples being copolymers of carboxylic acid containing monomers with ethylene, low or medium density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, cellulose proprionate, and cellulose butyrate.
