Abstract
1379492 Electromagnetic control of brakes POTAIN 6 March 1972 [9 March 1971] 10299/72 Heading F2E [Also in Division H1] A spring-applied electromagnetically released brake has an armature 5 of mild steel carrying an annular friction pad 6 movable between a release position and a position where the pad engages a disc 11 in the shaft it is desired to brake, a spring 13 urging the member to the engaged position and an electromagnetic control arrangement including a central core 2 of material having a high magnetic remanence such that when the electric current is removed the remanent magnetism overcomes the spring bias to maintain the brake in release position. The device may have a single winding arranged around core 2, passage of current in one direction causing magnetization and current of opposite sense causing demagnetization or as shown two windings 3, 4 may be provided, passage of current through arc causing the brake to be released and passage through the other causing brake application. In one control circuit, Fig. 4, connected with the motor of a crane a contact K1 feeds the magnetization winding 3 to release the brake and contacts K3 charge a capacitor C, contacts K2 isolating the demagnetization winding 4. When the motor is switched off or the current fails contacts K1 open the circuit of winding 3 and contacts K2 connect capacitor C to winding 4, discharge of the condenser causing application of the brake. Signal lamps may indicate the brake condition.
