Abstract
1377767 Caps for bottles OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 20 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 58964/71 Heading B8T A metal closure cap 21 for a container comprises a top portion 22 with a depending skirt 25 having a rolled edge 26. Scored in the cap is a V- shaped tear strip 13, with a small radius nose 14, diverging sides 15, 15a, and unequal length terminal legs 16, 16a, such that one leg 16 extends through the rolled edge 26 of the skirt and the other leg 16a terminates on the skirt with a segment of reversed curvature 18, a diametric hinge score 12 extending from the nose 14. The area of tear strip 13 is more than half the area of the cap and the nose portion 14 is situated substantially beyond the centre of the top portion 22 on the opposite side to the legs 16, 16a. A ring 20 is connected by a tongue 27 to a rivet 19 integral with the nose portion 14 of the tear strip 13. When affixed to a container the closure cap 21 has a plastic gasket liner with a vent aperture. Upon lifting ring 20 the front end of the ring engages the-top panel 22 outside the tear strip 13 and acts as a fulcrum, initially rupturing nose portion 14 to vent the internal pressure. Further removal of tear strip 13 weakens the cap and breaks the rolled edge 26, though it is retained at the shorter leg 16a, 18. Thereafter further pulling splits the cap 21 open about hinge score 12 and frees the cap from the container mouth.
