1377170 Sintered refractory article UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 55146/70 Addition to 1274211 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Permeable sintered articles, e.g. electrical resistor heater elements are formed by mixing powdered refractory material and one or more binders providing thermoplastic and setting properties, forming green sheets therefrom and deforming at least some thereof to form grooves or channels therein, bonding the sheets together so that the grooves, etc. form passageways through the body formed, and firing the body after setting, at least part of the material being inherently electrically conductive, or, alternatively, the material comprising constituents which react during firing to form an electrically conductive phase. The refractory may be a ceramic, e.g. alumina or silicon, a glass, e.g. lithium aluminosilicate glass, a glass ceramic or a cermet or mixtures of these. The silicon may be converted to silicon nitride by firing in a nitrogen atmosphere. A single resin, e.g. polyvinyl butyral may provide both plastic and setting binder properties. The material may comprise graphite and silicon and firing is effected, initially at a first temperature at which some silicon carbide is formed and for a time sufficient to convert the bulk of the silicon to silicon nitride and finally at a higher temperature to complete the reaction between the silicon and nitrogen, the silicon carbide formed providing the electrically conductive phase in the product.
