Abstract
A liquid sintering aid for densifying ceramic material is selected from solutions of H3BO3, B2O3 and mixtures of these solutions. In sintering ceramic articles, e.g. silicon carbide, a shaped green body is formed from a particulate ceramic material and a resin binder, and the green body is baked at a temperature of 500 to 1000 DEG C to form a porous body. The liquid sintering aid of B2O3 and/or H3BO3 is then dispersed through the porous body and the thus treated body is sintered at a temperature of 1900 to 2200 DEG C to produce the sintered ceramic article.
