Abstract

1376155 Laminates KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 28 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 50262/71 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] A material comprises hollow carbon microspheres bonded together with a thermosetting resin or a silicate based bonding agent, the microspheres having a diameter of 30-1000 microns and a wall thickness of from 10-100 microns. The resin may be a phenol resin, a urea resin, a melamine resin, a xylene resin, an epoxy resin, an alkyd resin, an unsaturated polyester resin, a silicone resin, a furan resin, or a resin obtained by polymerizing an unsaturated hydrocarbon obtained from petroleum. The silicate based bonding material may be water glass or cement. The material may be made by mixing the microspheres and the bonding material, and shaping the material so as to achieve the desired bond. The material so formed may be used as the core compound in a sandwich panel, in which it is covered with and adhered to external layers of a covering material which may be sheets of glass fibre reinforced plastics, glass cloth, a glass fibre mat or a plate of Fe, Al or asbestos. In the only example a phenol resin is used for the core material in proportion 70% microspheres, 30% resin by weight.
