Abstract

1375535 Production of hydrogen, hydrogen chloride and iron oxide EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 30 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 20485/73 Heading C1A H 2 and HCl are prepared by (a) reacting H 2 O with Cl 2 to produce HCl and O 2 , (b) reacting the HCl formed with Fe 2 O 3 to produce FeCl 3 and H 2 O, (c) decomposing the FeCl 3 into FeCl 2 and Cl 2 , and (d) hydrolysing the FeCl 2 to produce Fe 3 O 4 , HCl and H 2 , (e) oxidizing the Fe 3 O 4 to Fe 2 O 3 and then recycling the Fe 2 O 3 to step (b) and recycling the Cl 2 from step (c) to step (a). The Fe 3 O 4 produced in step (d) may be oxidized into Fe 2 O 3 by part of the O 2 from step (a) and the Fe 2 O 3 recycled to step (b). Step (a) may be carried out in the vapour phase over an Al 2 O 3 and/ or MgCl 2 catalyst on a CaO or MgO support at a temp. of 800-1000‹ C. Step (b) may be carried out in the gas or aq. phase at a temp. of 80- 100‹ C. The FeCl 3 vapour phase product may be dehydrated in a stream of dry HCl at a temp. of 110-200‹ C. The FeCl 3 aq. phase product may be extracted with isopropyl ether or methyl ethyl ketone at room temp. Step (c) may be carried out by heating anhydrous FeCl 3 at a temp. of 350-450‹ C. in a stream of dry Ar. Step (d) may be carried out by passing steam over FeCl 2 at a temp. of 450-650‹ C. The Fe 3 O 4 produced may be oxidized in pure O 2 at a temp. of 3000-4000‹ C. The thermal energy required may be provided by a nuclear reactor.
