Abstract
1431908 Production of MgO and HCl CHEMIEANLAGENBAU - UND MONTAGEKOMBINAT LEIPZIG VEB 12 March 1973 11800/73 Heading C1A MgO and HCl are produced by thermal decomposition of hydrated or anhydrous MgCl 2 in the presence of gases produced by simultaneous or previous combustion of H 2 with O 2 and/or Cl 2 . When anhydrous MgCl 2 is used the H 2 must be combusted in O 2 or in O 2 + Cl 2 . The MgCl 2 may be freed from inert gases by evacuation or by washing with pure O 2 or possibly H 2 and may be pre-heated and possibly dehydrated using the gases produced by the reaction. The H 2 , O 2 and/or Cl 2 may be pre-heated by heat exchange with the gases produced. The H 2 may be in the form of plasma. Sintered MgO may be produced by feeding the MgCl 2 downwardly counter current to the upward flowing gas. The product gases may be dried with MgCl 2 solution (any MgO in the gas being absorbed as MgCl 2 ) and the solution may be used to produce the MgCl 2 .H 2 O for the thermal decomposition. The MgO produced is cooled and washed with the H 2 , O 2 or Cl 2 .
