Abstract

1373116 Yeast &c. KANEGAFUCHI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 10 Nov 1971 52262/71 Heading C6F [Also in Division A2] A method of drying microbial cells, particularly yeast cells, obtained by cultivating microorganisms on petroleum hydrocarbons (including methane), methanol or acetic acid as carbon source involves evaporating by heat volatile matter contained in the cells, which have been recovered from the fermentation liquor by conventional methods, over a constant drying rate period until the falling rate sets in and heattreating the obtained product in a drying atmosphere at a temperature 65‹ and 120‹C for at least 30 minutes. Such heating breaks the membranes of the cells and denatures the protein to permit ready digestion by animals. The micro-organism may be one of the species of yeasts, bacteria or moulds particularly mentioned. Use of a mixture of Candida and Trichosporon cells is also mentioned. The Examples describe the drying of (1) Candida novellus (2) Candida lipolytica (3) Pichia miso mogii (4) Candida utilis and (5) Bacillus megatherium, each of which had been cultivated upon n-paraffin. According to the procedure of Example 1, 8Kg of dry yeast was mixed with 10Kg of a yeast cell cake having a volatiles content of 72%, that had been obtained by cultivating Candida novellus on n-paraffin containing 5% of iso-paraffin as carbon source, and the mixture was powdered. The powdery mixture was dried for one hour in a fluidized bed at a temperature of 40‹C and the dried product was further heated at 100‹C for 2 hours.
