Abstract
1372309 Self-draining surfaces L G WELTY 15 Sept 1972 42960/72 Headings E1C and E1G A self-draining surface, e.g. for a road, comprises a base 11 having means for draining away liquid (e.g. a sloped surface or a foraminous structure), a first porous layer 13 bonded thereto and, optionally, a second porous layer 14 bonded to the first layer, the layers 13, 14 respectively consisting of aggregate and scoria or slag having a mesh size of at least 1/16 inch and coated with a resinous binder in the ratio of (2-4) parts by volume of particles to 1 part binder to thereby give each layer a porosity of at least 10% and an impact strength of at least, 1,000 pounds per square inch. Each layer 13, 14 may be of different, graded particle sizes. The base 11 may be produced by (a) rolling aggregate into fresh concrete and allowing it to set; (b) sandblasting an old road, cleaning it with acid, spraying asphalt thereon, rolling aggregate therein and against spraying with asphalt; (c) covering a crushed rock base with hot asphalt and rolling quartz aggregate therein; (d) cleaning an in situ aluminium panel, coating it with resin and pressing aggregate therein. Resinous binder may be applied to the base 11. A foraminous drain pipe, Fig. 1 (not shown) may be included in the surface of the base 11 and the layers 13, 14 may be cleaned by forcing water under pressure back through the drain. Heating elements may be included in the layer 14. Examples of suitable resins are given.
